FOUNDER & PRINCIPAL CONSULTANT
Dr. Yvette E. Pearson has nearly 30 years of experience in engineering education research, practice, evaluation, consulting, and administration. Her university-based and consulting efforts have led to over $40 million in grant funding to support projects focused on the engagement and success of students from minoritized and marginalized identities (~$13M as PI/Co-PI, ~$30M attributable to coaching/consulting). They include a number of individual and intersectional dimensions of diversity such as race and ethnicity, disability, socioeconomics, and gender. A Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE), Dr. Pearson is recognized globally for her work that uniquely combines expertise in environmental engineering and justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (JEDI), specifically as it relates to sustainability. As past chair of ASCE's Formal Engineering Education committee (a subcommittee of the Committee on Sustainability), she led initiatives to infuse engineering curricula with principles of sustainability and to promote strategies towards the attainment of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, emphasizing targets aimed at ensuring equity for people in marginalized populations. Dr. Pearson has over 10 years of experience leading school-wide and program-level assessment efforts, conducting internal and external program evaluations for projects funded by the NSF and Department of Education, and leading studies of organizational climate and change strategies toward JEDI. As past vice chair of ASCE's Committee on Diversity and Inclusion she was part of the team that first integrated DEI into the organization's Code of Ethics, providing specific leadership for the principle that requires engineers to consider the diversity of the communities they serve and to include diverse perspectives in planning and performing their work. For two years, she served as the inaugural chair of ASCE's board-level committee, MOSAIC (Members of Society Advancing an Inclusive Culture), which is charged with leading the Society in all matters of DEI for the civil engineering profession. In that role, she led efforts to change ASCE Policy Statement 417, which is now titled "Justice, Equity, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion;" she co-led the development of ASCE's DEI Best Practices Guide; and she led MOSAIC in ensuring JEDI principles and practices were prominent in the 2020 revision of the Code of Ethics. For three years, she served as a Program Director in the Division of Undergraduate Education at NSF, where she managed a portfolio of roughly $70M in awards. Among her numerous awards and honors are ABET's Claire L. Felbinger Award for Diversity and Inclusion, the Society of Women Engineers' Distinguished Engineering Educator Award, ASCE's Professional Practice Ethics and Leadership Award, the University of Texas Regents Award for Excellence in Teaching, and the President's Medal, one of the highest honors in ASCE. Dr. Pearson holds a B.S. in Civil Engineering and an M.S. in Chemistry from Southern University and A&M College, a Graduate Certificate in Educational Research Methodology from the University of Illinois at Chicago, and a Ph.D. in Engineering and Applied Science from the University of New Orleans. She is a registered Professional Engineer in Louisiana and a Commissioner for the Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) of ABET. Her podcast, Engineering Change, has audiences in over 80 countries on six continents.

Samara Boyle is an undergraduate studying neuroscience. She began engaging in research during her first year in a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) lab. Over time, she worked on projects that involved mapping food deserts in Houston, causes of death in New Orleans, and that addressed topics related to environmental justice, ultimately becoming a lab manager. She later joined a neuroscience lab where she used GIS to track flight patterns of birds to understand how they use geomagnetic fields for navigation. Her current work focuses on advancing equity for graduate students and postdoctoral scholars as they seek careers in the STEM professoriate. Her work from that project led to a Best Diversity Paper award from the American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE) in 2020. She joined The PEER Group in 2021, where she supports data collection and analysis for the evaluation of projects related to the success of students from marginalized and minoritized identities in STEM.
